First National Bank (FNB), is one of the “big four” banks in South Africa. FNB is a division of First Rand Limited, a big financial services conglomerate listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), with the symbol FSR. Being the oldest financial service bank in South Africa, its origins date back to the Bank of the Eastern Province, which was formed in Grahamstown in 1838. At that time, the bank financed the wool export arm in the district. In 1874, the bank had four branches: Middelburg, Cradock, Grahamstown, and Queenstown. Due to a recession, the bank was acquired in 1874 by the Oriental Bank Corporation (OBC).
FNB is one of the three major divisions of the First Rand Group, while the others are Wesbank and Rand Merchant Bank. First National Bank retains all or part of its subsidiaries in South Africa, Botswana, Tanzania, Zambia, Ghana, Mozambique, Namibia, Sweden, India, Lesotho, and Guernsey while actively looking for expansion plans in Angola and Nigeria.
